2x2 vs 2x4 LED Panel Lights — Which One Fits Your Drop Ceiling?
If you're upgrading a commercial space from fluorescent troffers to LED panels, the first question is simple: what size do you need? The answer depends on your ceiling grid, room layout, and how much light you need.
Understanding Ceiling Grid Sizes
Drop ceilings (also called T-bar or suspended ceilings) use standardized grid sizes:
- 2x2 grid: 24" × 24" tiles (common in small offices, retail, healthcare)
- 2x4 grid: 24" × 48" tiles (common in large offices, schools, government buildings)
- Mixed grid: Some ceilings use 2x4 grids where every other tile is split into two 2x2 tiles
Your LED panel must match your grid. A 2x4 panel won't fit a 2x2 opening (unless you remove the centre crossbar, which is sometimes done but affects ceiling structure).

When to Use 2x2 Panels
Choose 2x2 panels for:
- Small to mid-size offices with 2x2 ceiling grids
- Medical and dental offices (precise, even illumination)
- Retail stores where you want more uniform, controlled coverage
- Hallways and corridors
- Rooms where you want more lighting zones (each panel on a separate switch)
Our 2x2 LED Flat Panel - 40W delivers 4,400 lumens at 110 lm/W efficiency with DLC listing. The 2x2 Backlit Panel - 36W is our budget-friendly option at $49.99.
When to Use 2x4 Panels
Choose 2x4 panels for:
- Large open offices with 2x4 ceiling grids
- Schools and classrooms
- Government and institutional buildings
- Warehouses with drop ceilings
- Any space where you need maximum coverage with fewer fixtures
Our 2x4 LED Flat Panel - 50W produce 5,500 lumens, and the 2x4 Backlit Panel - 72W delivers a massive 7,920 lumens with selectable wattage.
Edge-Lit vs Backlit: Which Panel Type?
Both 2x2 and 2x4 panels come in two styles:
Edge-Lit Panels
- LEDs around the perimeter, light guide plate distributes light
- Thinner profile (about 0.5" thick)
- More uniform light, no visible LED dots
- Slightly higher price
- Best for: offices, healthcare, retail where visual quality matters
Backlit Panels
- LEDs on the back shining through a diffuser
- Thicker (about 1.5-2")
- Higher efficacy (more lumens per watt)
- Budget-friendly
- Best for: warehouses, back offices, utility areas
Installation: Drop-In Replacement
LED panels are designed as direct replacements for fluorescent troffers. Installation is straightforward:
- Turn off the circuit at the breaker
- Remove existing fluorescent troffer from the grid
- Disconnect old fixture wiring
- Set new LED panel into the grid opening
- Connect to existing wiring (junction box on fixture)
- Turn circuit on — done
The whole swap takes 10-15 minutes per fixture. For large commercial projects, our sister company Safer Electric (ESA Licence #7008996) handles bulk installations across the GTA.
Energy Savings
Switching from fluorescent to LED panels reduces energy use by 40-60%:
| Fixture | Fluorescent | LED Panel | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x2 | 2-lamp U-tube = 64W | 36-40W panel | 37-44% |
| 2x4 | 3-lamp T8 = 96W | 50W panel | 48% |
| 2x4 | 4-lamp T8 = 128W | 72W panel | 44% |
For a 50-fixture office, switching from T8 to LED panels saves approximately $2,500-$4,000 per year in electricity at Ontario rates.
DLC Listing and Rebates
Both our 2x2 and 2x4 panels are DLC (DesignLights Consortium) listed. This qualifies them for Save on Energy (IESO) utility rebate programs in Ontario through Hydro One and local distribution companies. Rebates can cover 30-70% of product cost for commercial customers.

FAQ
Can I put a 2x4 panel in a 2x2 grid? No, not without removing a centre crossbar from the grid. This is sometimes done but weakens the ceiling structure. Use 2x2 panels for 2x2 grids.
How many LED panels do I need for my office? General rule: one 2x4 panel per 100 square feet, or one 2x2 panel per 60-80 square feet for standard office illumination (300-500 lux).
Can I dim LED panels? Yes. Our panels support 0-10V dimming. You'll need a compatible dimmer or building automation system.
How long do LED panels last? Our panels are rated for 50,000 hours. At 10 hours per day, 5 days a week, that's over 19 years before replacement is needed.
