Safer Lighting Inc. ("Safer Lighting," "we," "our," or "us"), a division of Safer Electric Inc. (ESA/ECRA Licence #7008996), is committed to protecting your personal information in accordance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA, S.C. 2000, c. 5) and Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL, S.C. 2010, c. 23).

This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and disclose it, and your rights as an individual.

1. Who We Are

Safer Lighting Inc. is a B2B and B2C seller of commercial and residential lighting products operating in Ontario, Canada. Our registered business address is 18 Strathearn Ave, Brampton, ON L6T 4L8. Privacy inquiries may be directed to our Privacy Officer at privacy@saferlighting.ca.

2. Scope

This policy applies to personal information collected through:

• Our website at saferlighting.ca
• Our inventory and ordering platform at saferinventory.com
• Email, telephone, and other direct communications with us
• Our newsletter, affiliate referral program, and contractor account registration

3. Information We Collect

3a. Information You Provide Directly

• Name, business name, and contact details (email, phone, address)
• Billing and shipping addresses
• Order history and product preferences
• Account credentials (for contractor portal access)
• Communications and warranty claim submissions

3b. Information Collected Automatically

When you visit our website, our servers and third-party tools collect:

• Technical data: IP address, browser type, device type, operating system
• Browsing data: Pages visited, time on site, referral source, click interactions
• Transaction data: Cart contents, checkout flow behaviour, purchase completion

4. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use the following cookies and scripts on this website:

• Essential cookies: Session management, cart persistence, checkout security. These cannot be disabled without breaking core store functionality.
• Preference cookies: Remember your language, currency, and display settings.
• Shopify Analytics: Shopify's built-in analytics platform tracks aggregate store performance (page views, conversion rates, sales totals). Data is processed by Shopify Inc. under their Privacy Policy.
• Google Tag Manager (GTM-M29C673M): We use Google Tag Manager, a tag management system operated by Google LLC. GTM itself does not set analytics cookies directly, but it manages and loads third-party scripts that may set cookies for analytics and advertising purposes. You can review and manage your preferences by contacting us at privacy@saferlighting.ca or by visiting Google's privacy controls.
• Affiliate referral tracking: If you arrive at our site through an affiliate or referral link, a first-party cookie stores your referral source (UTM parameters) to attribute your purchase correctly. This cookie does not track your activity on other websites and expires after 30 days.

You may disable non-essential cookies at any time through your browser settings. Disabling analytics cookies will not affect your ability to browse or purchase from us.

5. Why We Collect and Use Your Information

We collect personal information only for purposes a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances (PIPEDA Principle 4). Specifically:

• Order fulfillment: Processing payments, arranging shipping, issuing invoices, and managing returns and warranty claims.
• Customer account management: Creating and maintaining your contractor or B2C account on saferinventory.com.
• Marketing communications: Sending you commercial electronic messages (CEMs) where you have provided express or implied consent under CASL. See Section 7.
• Analytics and store improvement: Understanding how visitors use our site to improve products, navigation, and pricing.
• Legal and tax compliance: Retaining transaction records for the six-year period required under the Ontario Taxation Act and Canada Revenue Agency requirements.
• Fraud prevention and security: Detecting and preventing fraudulent orders, chargebacks, and unauthorized account access.

6. Disclosure of Personal Information

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We may share your information with:

• Payment processors: Shopify Payments and Stripe process card transactions. We never handle raw card data (PCI-DSS compliance delegated to Shopify).
• Shipping carriers: Your name and address are shared with courier and freight partners to fulfill your order.
• Google LLC: Analytics and advertising tag data is processed by Google as described in Section 4. Google may process data in the United States; see Google's Privacy Policy.
• Shopify Inc.: Our e-commerce platform processes all store data under our data processing agreement with Shopify. Shopify is headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
• Safer Electric Inc.: If your warranty claim requires on-site electrical labour within the Greater Toronto Area service area, your contact and address information is shared with Safer Electric Inc. (ESA/ECRA Licence #7008996) solely for scheduling the service call.
• Legal or regulatory authorities: Where required by applicable Canadian law, court order, or lawful government request.

Where personal information is transferred outside Canada (e.g., to Google servers in the United States), we take reasonable contractual steps to require comparable protection.

7. Marketing Emails and CASL Compliance

We send commercial electronic messages (newsletters, promotions, product announcements) only where we have:

• Express consent: You checked a clearly labelled opt-in box at checkout or on a signup form; or
• Implied consent: You have made a purchase from us in the past two years and have not unsubscribed (existing business relationship under CASL s. 10(9)(a)).

Every marketing email we send includes:

• Clear identification of Safer Lighting Inc. as the sender
• Our mailing address
• A one-click unsubscribe link that is honoured within 10 business days

8. Data Retention

We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes identified above:

• Transaction records: Six years from the date of the transaction (CRA and Ontario Taxation Act requirement).
• Warranty claims: Five years from product purchase date (aligned with our warranty term).
• Marketing consent records: Until withdrawal of consent plus two years (CASL evidentiary requirement).
• Inactive accounts: Deleted or anonymized after three years of inactivity, following notice to you.

9. Your Rights Under PIPEDA

You have the right to:

• Access: Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
• Correction: Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
• Withdraw consent: Withdraw consent for non-essential uses (e.g., marketing) at any time, subject to legal or contractual restrictions.
• Complaint: File a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at priv.gc.ca if you believe your rights have been violated.

To exercise any of these rights, contact our Privacy Officer at privacy@saferlighting.ca. We will respond within 30 days as required by PIPEDA.

10. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards including TLS encryption for data in transit, access controls limiting staff access to personal information on a need-to-know basis, and Shopify's PCI-DSS Level 1 certified platform for payment data. No transmission over the internet is 100% secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security but commit to notifying you and the OPC in the event of a material breach as required by law.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy periodically. If we make material changes (e.g., adding a new category of third-party disclosure), we will post a notice on our homepage and update the "Last Updated" date above. Continued use of our website after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
