AFCI vs GFCI — What's the Difference and Where Do You Need Each?
AFCI and GFCI are both life-safety devices, but they protect against completely different hazards. Confusing the two — or omitting either where required — is a code violation and a safety risk. Here's the clear breakdown.
What Each Protects Against

GFCI — Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter
A ground fault occurs when current flows through an unintended path to ground — often through a person touching a live conductor while in contact with a grounded surface (wet floor, metal pipe, etc.).
The GFCI trips at 5 milliamps of leakage current. For context, it takes only 30-50mA to cause ventricular fibrillation (fatal heart rhythm). A standard 15A breaker won't detect this tiny leakage.

AFCI — Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter
An arc fault is an unintended electrical discharge — like a spark from a loose wire connection, damaged cable insulation, or a nail through a wire in the wall. These arcs generate intense heat that can ignite surrounding materials (wood, insulation, drywall).
A regular breaker won't trip on an arc fault because the current may be below the breaker's rating. The AFCI uses electronic sensing to distinguish dangerous arcs from normal arcs (like those in a motor or switch).

The CEC currently mandates AFCI primarily for bedroom circuits, where arc faults are a leading cause of nighttime electrical fires. Some jurisdictions and the NEC (used in the US) have expanded AFCI requirements to living rooms, hallways, and other living spaces — Canadian code may follow in future updates.
Can You Need Both on the Same Circuit?
Yes. A bedroom circuit next to a bathroom might require:
- AFCI protection for the bedroom outlets (arc fault)
- GFCI protection for the bathroom outlets (ground fault)
Solutions:
- Dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker — Provides both protections for the entire circuit
- AFCI breaker at panel + GFCI receptacle at bathroom outlet — Each where needed
Dual-function breakers are more expensive (~$55-$70) but simplify the installation.
Common Nuisance Tripping
Both AFCI and GFCI can trip when they shouldn't:

- Long cable runs with minor insulation leakage
- Motors (sump pumps, freezers) during startup

- Vacuum cleaners and power tools with brush motors
- Older dimmer switches

If you're experiencing repeated tripping, don't disable the protection. Have an electrician diagnose the cause — it's often a wiring issue that needs correction.
