What Is DLC?
DLC stands for DesignLights Consortium, a non-profit organization that maintains a qualified products list (QPL) of energy-efficient commercial lighting. To earn DLC listing, an LED product must meet strict performance requirements for:
- Efficacy (lumens per watt) — minimum 110 lm/W for DLC Standard, 120+ lm/W for DLC Premium
- Colour quality (CRI 80+, colour consistency)
- Lumen maintenance (light output after 50,000 hours)
- Safety certifications (cUL, ETL, or ETL listing)
- Warranty (minimum 5 years)
There are two tiers:
- DLC Standard — Meets baseline efficiency requirements
- DLC Premium — Exceeds standard requirements, qualifies for higher rebates
Why DLC Matters in Ontario
Ontario utility companies run incentive programs that reimburse businesses for upgrading to energy-efficient lighting. The primary requirement for most of these programs is DLC listing on the QPL at time of purchase.

How to Verify DLC Listing
Every DLC-listed product has a unique model number on the DesignLights Consortium website:
- Visit designlights.org/qpl
- Search by manufacturer or model number
- Verify the product appears on the active QPL
Your utility company will check this before approving the rebate. Products that are NOT on the active QPL at the time of purchase will be rejected.

- Receive your rebate — Typically 6-12 weeks after submission

FAQ
Is DLC the same as ENERGY STAR? No. DLC covers commercial lighting products. ENERGY STAR covers residential and some commercial products. Different certification, different qualifying criteria.
Can I get a rebate if I install the panels myself? Some programs require installation by a licensed electrician. Check your specific utility program requirements before starting.
Do DLC rebates apply to new construction? Most utility rebate programs are for retrofits (replacing existing less-efficient lighting). New construction may have separate incentive programs. Check with your utility.
