GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets save lives. They detect current leaking through your body to ground and cut power in 1/25th of a second — fast enough to prevent electrocution. Ontario code is strict about where they're required.

How GFCI Works

A GFCI monitors the current flowing through the hot and neutral conductors. In a normal circuit, these should be equal. If current is "leaking" — say, through a person touching a live wire while grounded — the GFCI detects the imbalance (as little as 5 milliamps) and trips in about 40 milliseconds.

This is different from a regular breaker, which only trips on overcurrent (15A or 20A). A person can be fatally electrocuted at well under 1 amp — a regular breaker won't help.

Where GFCI Is Required in Ontario

The Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), enforced in Ontario by the ESA, requires GFCI protection in these locations:

Bathrooms

All receptacles in a bathroom require GFCI protection. No exceptions. This includes receptacles for hair dryers, electric razors, and any other devices used near water.

Kitchen

All counter receptacles within 1.5 metres of a sink require GFCI protection. This typically means every counter receptacle in a standard kitchen.

Outdoor

All exterior receptacles require GFCI protection, regardless of whether they're covered or exposed. This includes front porch, back patio, deck, and garage exterior outlets.

Garage

All garage receptacles require GFCI protection. This applies to attached and detached garages.

Unfinished Basement

Receptacles in unfinished basement areas require GFCI protection. Once a basement is finished (drywalled, floored), general receptacles follow normal rules, but any receptacles within 1.5m of a sink still need GFCI.

Within 1.5m of Any Sink

This is the catch-all rule. Any receptacle within 1.5 metres of a sink requires GFCI protection — laundry tubs, wet bars, utility sinks.

Hot Tubs and Pools

All receptacles within 3 metres of a pool or hot tub edge require GFCI protection. The hot tub circuit itself also requires a GFCI breaker.

Boathouses and Marinas

All receptacles in boathouses and marinas require GFCI protection.

Two Ways to Provide GFCI Protection

Option 1: GFCI Receptacle

A GFCI receptacle replaces a standard outlet. It has TEST and RESET buttons on the face. It can protect itself AND downstream outlets wired "through" it.

  • Multiple outlets on one circuit all need GFCI protection
  • You don't want the TEST/RESET buttons visible on the outlet face
  • The receptacle location makes a GFCI outlet impractical

GFCI protection on one receptacle that feeds downstream outlets is the most cost-effective approach for most homes.

Testing Your GFCI Outlets

GFCI outlets should be tested monthly:

  1. Press the TEST button — the outlet should click and lose power
  2. Plug in a lamp or tester to confirm no power
  3. Press the RESET button — power should restore

Common Code Violations

  1. No GFCI in a renovated bathroom — Older homes may lack GFCI, but any renovation that touches the electrical must bring it to current code
  2. Covering GFCI outlets with furniture — The TEST/RESET buttons must be accessible
  3. Using GFCI on circuits with motors — Some sump pumps and refrigerators cause nuisance tripping on GFCI. Dedicated non-GFCI circuits may be appropriate (consult an electrician)
  4. GFCI at outdoor receptacle without weather cover — Outdoor GFCI outlets need an in-use cover (not just a flip cover)

FAQ

Are GFCI outlets required in older homes? Existing outlets are grandfathered, but if you renovate or add new circuits, they must meet current CEC requirements. It's highly recommended to add GFCI protection regardless — it's a $15 life-safety upgrade.

Can one GFCI receptacle protect multiple outlets? Yes. A GFCI receptacle wired as "feed-through" protects all downstream outlets on the same circuit. This is how electricians typically protect entire bathroom or kitchen circuits with a single GFCI.

Why does my GFCI keep tripping? Common causes: moisture in an outdoor box, a faulty appliance with a ground fault, shared neutral wires from a multi-wire branch circuit, or a worn-out GFCI. An electrician can diagnose the cause.

Is a GFCI outlet the same as a grounded outlet? No. GFCI detects ground faults (current leaking to ground). A grounded outlet has a grounding conductor connected to the ground bus. In older ungrounded systems, a GFCI can be installed to provide ground fault protection without grounding, but the outlet must be labelled "No Equipment Ground."
