Outdoor Lighting Ideas for Ontario Winters — What Survives -30°C
Ontario winters are brutal on outdoor lighting. Snow, ice, freeze-thaw cycles, road salt spray, and temperatures hitting -30°C will destroy anything not built for it. Here's what actually works — and what to avoid.
Why LEDs Excel in Cold Weather
This is one area where LEDs have a massive advantage over every other lighting technology:
| Factor | LED | HID/Metal Halide | CFL | Incandescent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance at -30°C | Excellent (brighter) | Slow start, reduced output | May not start | Normal |
| Start-up time at -30°C | Instant | 5-15 minutes warm-up | May fail | Instant |
| Vibration resistance | High (solid state) | Low (glass, filament) | Low | Low |
| Moisture sensitivity | Low | Moderate | High | Low |
LEDs actually perform better in cold temperatures. The cooler the ambient temperature, the more efficient the LED chip operates. The electronics (drivers) can be the weak point, but quality drivers are rated to -40°C.
What to Look For
1. IP65 or Higher Rating
IP65 means protection against water jets from any angle. For exposed outdoor fixtures:
- IP65 minimum for covered areas (soffits, porch ceilings)
- IP66-IP67 for fully exposed locations
- All our LED flood lights are IP65 rated
2. Operating Temperature Range
Check the spec sheet for operating temperature:
- -20°C to +50°C: Minimum for Ontario
- -40°C to +50°C: Ideal for Ontario winters
- All our outdoor fixtures are rated to -40°C
3. Corrosion-Resistant Housing
Salt spray from roads and sidewalks accelerates corrosion.
- Die-cast aluminum with powder coat: Best durability
- Plastic housing: Lighter but may become brittle in extreme cold
- Stainless steel hardware: Resists salt corrosion
4. Surge Protection
Winter storms bring power surges. Look for:
- 2kV surge protection: Standard
- 6kV surge protection: Commercial grade (our 200W flood lights include this)
- Whole-house surge protector at the panel is also recommended
Best Products for Ontario Winters
Flood Lights — Security & Area Lighting
| Product | Wattage | Lumens | IP Rating | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LED Flood 30W | 30W | 3,600 lm | IP65 | $29.99 |
| LED Flood 50W | 50W | 6,000 lm | IP65 | $39.99 |
| LED Flood 100W | 100W | 12,000 lm | IP65 | $64.99 |

Best for: Parking lots, loading docks, building perimeters, sports courts
Pot Lights — Soffit & Porch Lighting
Our slim LED pot lights work great in covered outdoor applications (soffits, covered porches):
- 4" Slim LED - 9W — $8.99
- 6" Slim LED - 12W — $10.99
Use wet-rated versions for locations directly exposed to rain or snow.
Strip Lights — Architectural & Accent
For outdoor accent lighting:
- IP65 LED Strip - 5M — Silicone-coated, splash resistant — $34.99
- Mount under soffits, railings, or deck edges
Photocell and Dusk-to-Dawn Considerations
Winter means 14+ hours of darkness. Your outdoor lights will run significantly longer:
- Summer runtime: ~8 hours/night
- Winter runtime: ~14 hours/night
This is nearly continuous use, so the 80% rule applies. A dusk-to-dawn light on a 15A circuit should not draw more than 12A. LED fixtures make this easy — a 100W flood draws less than 1A.
Our LED Flood 150W with Photocell has an integrated dusk-to-dawn sensor, so it turns on/off automatically with no timer adjustment needed for seasonal changes.
Installation Tips for Winter
- Use outdoor-rated junction boxes (NEMA 3R minimum) for all connections
- NMWU wire for any outdoor or underground wiring — NMD90 is indoor only
- Seal all penetrations through exterior walls with silicone or outdoor caulk
- Angle fixtures slightly downward to prevent snow accumulation on the lens
- Mount securely — Ontario wind loads require proper mechanical fastening, not just adhesive
Power Planning for Outdoor Circuits
| Feature | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Wire type | NMWU (outdoor/underground) |
| Circuit | Dedicated outdoor circuit recommended |
| GFCI protection | Required for all outdoor receptacles (CEC) |
| Breaker | 20A recommended for outdoor circuits |
| Underground depth | 600mm direct burial, 450mm in conduit |

FAQ
Will LED lights work at -30°C? Yes. LEDs perform better in cold temperatures. Quality LED drivers are rated to -40°C. Our outdoor fixtures are tested for Ontario winter conditions.
Do I need special wire for outdoor lighting? Yes. Use NMWU cable for all outdoor and underground wiring. NMD90 is for indoor dry locations only.
Can snow damage outdoor LED fixtures? Snow accumulation can block light output but won't damage IP65+ rated fixtures. Angle fixtures to prevent buildup, or choose models with heat-generating lenses that melt light snow.
How much does outdoor lighting installation cost? Typically $150-$300 per fixture installed, including wiring and weatherproofing. Underground runs add $15-$25 per foot. Contact Safer Electric for a free quote.
