If you've been told you can't install pot lights because you don't have attic access, that advice is about 10 years out of date. Modern slim LED pot lights have changed the game completely.

Here's how it works and what your options are.

The Old Problem

Traditional pot lights required 6-8 inches of ceiling depth because the fixture housing (the "can") was a large metal cylinder that sat above the drywall. Installing them meant:

  • Accessing the ceiling from above (the attic)
  • Cutting large holes for the housing
  • Running wire between joists
  • Ensuring proper clearance from insulation

This made pot lights impractical for:

  • Condos and apartments (concrete above)
  • Main floors with finished rooms above
  • Finished basements with subfloor above
  • Multi-storey homes without attic access to each floor

The Solution: Slim LED Pot Lights

Modern slim LED pot lights are only 0.5 inches deep — about the thickness of a pencil. They mount directly to the drywall ceiling from below using spring clips. No housing, no can, no six inches of clearance needed.

How the Installation Works (From Below)

Here's the basic process that licensed electricians follow:

1. Plan Your Layout

Mark pot light positions on the ceiling. Use a stud finder to locate joists — you want lights between joists, not on them.

2. Check for Obstructions

Use a small exploratory hole or a stud finder with deep-scan mode to check for pipes, ducts, or blocking between joists.

3. Cut the Hole

Use the provided template or a hole saw to cut through the drywall. The cutout is only 4.25" (for 4-inch) or 6.25" (for 6-inch).

4. Run the Wire

Fish NMD90 14/2 wire from an existing junction box or switch location to each pot light location. For multiple lights in a series, daisy-chain from one to the next.

Use a flex bit (72" long) to drill through joists from below if needed. Fish tape or glow rods help pull wire through enclosed ceiling cavities.

5. Connect and Mount

Connect the supply wire to the pot light's junction box using the quick-connect plug. Push the junction box up into the ceiling, insert the light, and release the spring clips. Done.

Total Install Time

An experienced electrician typically installs 6-8 pot lights in about 2-3 hours, even without attic access.

Real-World Scenarios

Condos and Apartments

Slim pot lights are the only viable option. The concrete slab above leaves zero clearance for traditional cans. Wire is fished through the ceiling cavity between the concrete and drywall.

Main Floor of a Two-Storey Home

The floor system above typically has 10-12 inches of depth — more than enough. The challenge is fishing wire, which an electrician handles with flex bits and fish tape.

Finished Basement

Between the drywall and subfloor, there's usually 8-12 inches of space. Slim pot lights fit easily, and wire can often be fished from the panel through the existing ceiling.

Cathedral Ceilings

Slim pot lights install directly from below. Since there's no flat attic, traditional fixtures would have required removing and replacing the entire ceiling.

When You Actually CAN'T Install Pot Lights

A few rare situations where even slim pot lights won't work:

  • Concrete ceilings without a drywall layer — No cavity for wiring (common in exposed-concrete lofts)
  • Asbestos drywall or vermiculite insulation — Requires professional abatement before any ceiling work
  • Radiant heating in the ceiling — Risk of damaging heating cables

Ontario Code Requirements

Even with slim LED fixtures, Ontario Electrical Safety Code still requires:

  • A licensed electrician for all new pot light installations
  • An ESA permit for adding new fixtures to a circuit
