RGB vs RGBW vs Tunable White LED Strips — What's the Difference?

Colour-changing LED strips come in three main types, and picking the wrong one is a common (and expensive) mistake. Here's the practical difference.

Quick Comparison

Colours Red, Green, Blue + mixes RGB + dedicated White Warm white ↔ Cool white
White quality Poor (blueish/greenish) Excellent (dedicated LED) Excellent (both warm & cool)
Best for Accent colour effects Colour effects + usable white Professional white lighting

RGB Strips — Colour Only

RGB strips have three LED chips (red, green, blue) that mix to create millions of colour combinations. They're great for:

  • Party and entertainment lighting
  • Accent lighting behind TVs and monitors
  • Bar and restaurant mood lighting
  • Holiday decorations

The big limitation: RGB strips cannot produce high-quality white light. When all three colours mix at full brightness, the result is a cold, slightly bluish "white" that looks nothing like proper illumination. It's usable for ambient colour effects but not for functional lighting.

RGBW Strips — Best of Both

RGBW strips add a dedicated white LED chip alongside the RGB chips. This fourth channel produces clean, natural white light independently of the colour-mixing LEDs.

This means you get:

  • Full colour-changing capability (all RGB colours)
  • Clean, usable white light (from the dedicated W chip)
  • The ability to blend white with colours for pastels and tinted whites

Our RGBW LED Strip - 5M uses 4-in-1 chips producing 16 million colour combinations plus clean 4000K white — all from a single strip.

Best for:

  • Restaurants and bars (colour ambiance + functional white for cleaning/setup)
  • Home entertainment rooms (colour effects + task lighting)
  • Retail displays (accent colours + clean product illumination)
  • Any space that needs both colour and white

Tunable White Strips — Professional White Control

Tunable white strips have two channels of white LEDs: warm white (~2700K) and cool white (~6500K). By mixing the two channels, you can set any colour temperature between warm and cool.

Best for:

  • Architectural and cove lighting
  • Kitchens and living rooms (adjust warmth by time of day)
  • Circadian lighting (warm in evening, cool in morning)
  • Photography and video studios
  • Hospitality (warm at dinner, bright at breakfast)

Tunable white strips don't produce colours — only white light across the Kelvin range. If you need both colour and tunable white, RGBW is your answer.

Which Controller Do You Need?

Each strip type requires a matching controller:

Strip Type Controller Type Channels Compatible
RGB 3-channel RGB 3 RF remote, DMX, wifi
RGBW 4-channel RGBW 4 RF remote, DMX, wifi
Tunable White 2-channel CCT 2 RF remote, DMX, wifi

Important: An RGB controller will NOT properly drive an RGBW strip. You'll lose the white channel. Always match your controller to your strip type.

FAQ

Can I make RGBW strips show only white? Yes. Turn off the RGB channels and use only the white channel for clean, dedicated white light.

Do RGB strips work with smart home systems? Many wifi-enabled RGB and RGBW controllers work with Google Home, Alexa, and Apple HomeKit. Check controller compatibility before purchasing.

Is RGBW brighter than RGB? For colours, they're similar. For white, RGBW is significantly brighter because the dedicated white LED is more efficient than mixing R+G+B to create white.

Can I use a tunable white strip for colour effects? No. Tunable white only adjusts between warm and cool white. For colours, you need RGB or RGBW strips.
